Every Basnayake Nilame holding office on the day Application immediately preceding the appointed date shall—

on completion of a period of five years from the date of his appointment to such office, cease to hold such office unless the President has extended his period of office:
Provided however that, where such person completes a period of five years in such office within a period of one week from the appointed date he shall on the expiration of a period of one week from the appointed date cease to hold such office, unless the President has extended his period of office.
