s 1Short title
This Act may be cited as the Census (Amendment)
Act, No. 26 of 2011.
s 2Amendment of section 5 of Chapter 143
The Census Ordinance (hereinafter referred to as the
“principal enactment”) is hereby amended in subsection (4)
of section 5, by the substitution for the words “to a fine not exceeding ten thousand rupees” of the words “to a fine not exceeding fifty thousand rupees”.
s 3Replacement of section 6 of the principal enactment
Section 6 of the principal enactment is hereby repealed and the following new section is substituted therefor:—
6. Every District Secretary, shall in addition to the powers, duties and functions exercised, performed or discharged by him within the
Administrative District in respect of which he is appointed, be appointed as the
Commissioner of Census in respect of such
District:
Provided that the Minister may where it appears that it is not practicable to appoint the
District Secretary as Commissioner of Census appoint any other person as Commissioner of
Census for such Administrative District or part thereof, as the case may be.”.
s 4Amendment of section 21 of the principal enactment
Section 21 of the principal enactment is hereby amended as follows:—
in subsection (1) of that section, by the substitution for the words “or to a fine not exceeding ten

s 5Sinhala text to prevail in case of inconsistency
In the event of any inconsistency between the Sinhala and Tamil texts of this Act, the Sinhala text shall prevail.
