Section 75

Official English translation. Where it differs from the Sinhala or Tamil text, the Act itself says which text prevails.

The Second Schedule to the principal enactment is hereby repealed and the following Schedule is substituted therefor :—

“SECOND SCHEDULE

[Section 45]

FORM OF DIRECTIONS FOR THE GUIDANCE OF A VOTER IN

VOTING, WHICH SHALL BE EXHIBITED OUTSIDE EVERY

POLLING STATION AND IN EVERY COMPARTMENT OF EVERY

POLLING STATION

Every voter shall have one vote, which may be given to the candidate of a recognized political party or independent group, of his choice.

. The voter will go into one of the compartments and place a cross

(X)

on the right hand side of the ballot paper opposite the symbol of the recognized political party or the independent group as the case may be.

The voter who cast his vote by a ballot paper will then fold up the ballot paper so as to show the official mark on the back to the presiding

officer and put the ballot paper into the ballot box, and forthwith quit the polling station.

If the voter inadvertently spoils a ballot paper, he can return it to the presiding officer, who will, if satisfied with such inadvertence, give him another ballot paper.

If the voter :—

(a)

votes for more than one candidate, or

(b)

places any mark on the ballot paper by which he may be afterwards identified, his ballot paper will be void and will not be counted.

If the voter takes a ballot paper out of the polling station or puts into a ballot box anything other than a ballot paper which he is authorized to put into the box, he will be liable on conviction after summary trial before a Magistrate to a fine not exceeding five hundred rupees or to imprisonment of either description for a term not exceeding six months or both such fine and imprisonment.”.
